“Reclaiming Life”: How Personal Best Practices Mirror Risk Management

At Risk Alternatives, we are great fans of ChangeThis, the website created by marketing guru Seth Godin. There, people request manifestos about different issues — PDFs with reasoned, persuasive calls to action. One of our favorites is Reclaim Life, written by Stuart Levine. In rereading it recently, I was struck by how the processes Levine advocates for enhancing personal effectiveness parallel risk management best practices. He emphasizes identifying what’s important, cutting down extraneous efforts and interruptions. He urges readers to develop processes, accept that good enough is good enough, but bake continuous improvement into daily activities. He also emphasizes balance.

Read Levine’s manifesto. Share it with others on your team. Keep in mind that risk management deals with people, whether addressing nonprofit risk or startup risk. Improve the people, improve the processes, and you improve the results.
